Linoleum relief carving is a printmaking process that we will explore with the goal of making contemporary artworks. In this course we will explore the versatility of linocut artwork by walking you through the steps of the process beginning with your imagery ideas through to pulling unique prints start to finish. We will begin with a brief showing of examples from artists through the technique’s evolution and history for understanding the method’s potential and inspiration. We will learn the foundations of how to take your imagery ideas and transfer them onto your blocks, carve your original designs into the linoleum, and explore the possibilities of adding color in the print process and after the print has been created. This course is for anyone interested in handmade relief printmaking and wants to learn new creative techniques that can easily brought into any home studio setting.

Students will…

  • discover the potential for bringing your ideas to life through looking to classical and contemporary printmaking artists for inspiration

  • explore multiple methods for transferring images onto linoleum

  • get an overview of the materials you’ll need and learn how to set up an efficient workspace

  • learn safe carving techniques with a variety of tools and the many methods to add depth and creativity to your artwork

  • learn how to ink your blocks and transfer your images onto paper or fabric

Students will create one carved slab of linoleum that can yield prints for years to come in addition to pulling our own prints on paper and/or fabric using various ink application techniques
